The most direct route is the most taken, and therefore the most competitive. This is a result of ignorance—one knows no better than fulfilling desire with the clear path. This is the beginning of the free market and the worship of efficiency, which is a fetish of supply.

The most circuitous route is the least taken, and therefore the most contemplative. This results in enlightenment—one who knows to abate desire with mysterious paths.

If one still believes in the free market however, which is not mysterious, this the beginning of the art market and the worship of aesthetics, which is a fetish of demand.

If one has dismissed the free market as a result of ignorance, and the art market (e.g. the controlled market) as hypocrisy, then you are in the wilderness. A freedom from supply and demand, greed and envy, is possible, which is true enlightenment.
