NICHOLETTE KOMINOS

GRAVITY AND LUCK

My mixed-media constructions explore the shift between the flat, illusory qualities of painting, and the attributes of remembrance and gravity inherent to sculpture. Also, often within each piece, I play with dichotomies, various degrees of delicacy, and the shatterable balance of external and internal forces, i.e., materials that have different levels of strength and aging. Compositionally, the work is sparse to create room for contemplation and allow small details to reveal their significance.
Materiality is a critical factor in my work; having been influenced by the second-wave of feminism and the Arte Povera movement, I experiment with domestic and industrial materials to evoke memories and psychological associations. Additionally, my experiences teaching art workshops to children and families has engendered a more spontaneous approach to materials and process.
